“Heart of the Highlands."
Get off the beaten path!
Do you run, bike, hike, walk or kayak?
Maybe you are a competitive runner or cyclist who keeps mileage logs and race numbers neatly in plastic sheets in a three ring binder. Or maybe you just hop on your hybrid and head to the nearest 7-11 for Ben and Jerry’s every so often. No matter what group you are, West Milford has something to offer you.
Come on over and get off the beaten path and try something different. Consider West Milford as your leisure-time day destination. Here you’ll discover a little piece of paradise in an 80-plus square mile municipality located in Passaic County, NJ. With its beautiful mountainous terrain, dotted with nearly forty tranquil lakes and over seven State parks which beckon for your reach, West Milford is crisscrossed by narrow roads that run along its scenic valleys and ridges. And if that’s not enough, Newark’s Pequannock Watershed consisting of about 35,000 acres and contains five major reservoirs offers access to hiking, hunting, horseback riding, fishing and boating with a permit issued to visitors.
But wait a minute! What about those who like indoor activities? Well there are plenty of things to offer. West Milford has a talented creative artist community of painters, sculptors, artisans, photographers and musicians all offering affordable works at the local galleries in town. Shop at local stores for all the latest fashions or search for that hard to find antique. Or just take a Sunday drive and view the scenery of the mountains, Greenwood Lake or watch the air show at the airport. After a day of leisure, we have many fine restaurants offing exception value and good food. Perhaps a bed and breakfast in a charming Victorian home for a long weekend is all you need.
A major state highway, Route 23, those winds along its southern boundary, more or less paralleling the Pequannock River, provides its main transportation links to the outside world so it’s easy to get to. Less than 60 minutes for New York, a trip to West Milford makes perfect sense in today’s economy with high gasoline prices. We are literally right in our back yard, so come and visit West Milford for a family fun filled destitution.
Despite its enormous size, West Milford is blessed with a small-town friendly atmosphere where you’ll want to come back for more or might even decide to stay here. Either way West Milford welcomes you.
